Should School Start Later?

J.B. Guirand

Do you think school for middle and high school should start later in the day rather than early in the morning? I feel that high school students do not get their essential 8 hours of sleep as they should due to things such as work, hanging out with friends, homework, and simply just staying up late.  In my opinion, one of the main reasons students do not get enough sleep is early school start times. Because they do not get enough sleep, it causes students to have a poor academic performance.

The American Academy of Pediatrics External has recommended that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later to give students the opportunity to get the amount of sleep they need, but most American adolescents start school earlier than that.

“I feel like if school started later I would be more happy to go and I would’ve way more energy to go,” Senior Danica said.

From sources such as the Academy of Pediatrics, external students should start school later than they do as of right now and they believe that this will help increase academic performance. From the student’s point of view, they feel as if they received more time to sleep they would do better.
